A fit-out fit for a king

We’re delighted to have been appointed to reinterpret Limerick’s King John’s Castle and turn it into a must-see attraction for the South-West. The project kicked off yesterday with the first design group meeting where we met the wider project team. Everyone is very excited to have the opportunity to create an amazing visitor experience at the castle and there was a great exchange of ideas.

King John’s Castle was built in 1212. Though John never visited Limerick, his castle was for centuries an important strategic and administrative centre, controlling access to the Shannon and much of Ireland. The castle has been at the centre of a lot of history and has had many functions over the years; incredibly, it was even home to a twentieth-century council housing estate!

The multi-million euro project will explore the site’s history and archaeology as well as telling the story of Limerick and the wider Shannon region. We’ve already had fun exploring Limerick city (our last research trip saw us on top of St Mary’s Cathedral!) and are looking forward to discovering much more of the county and surrounding region.

We’ll be tweeting about our King John’s journey in the coming weeks and months– follow us @tandemstudio to find out more!
